Own Your Finances: The Subscription-Free Personal Tracker

I replaced $100+ in annual subscription fees with a single $17 one-time purchase — a private finance tracker that installs on my phone, works offline, and keeps my data completely off the cloud. Here’s the full breakdown.

Let me ask you something: how much did you spend on finance apps last year?

If you’re using Monarch Money, that’s $14.99 a month — $180 a year. YNAB? $9.08 a month — $109 a year. Personal Capital is “free,” but they make their money by analyzing your data and selling financial products to you. Nothing is ever actually free.

Add those up over five years and you’re looking at $500–$900 just for the privilege of looking at your own money. That math has never sat right with me.

So I built something different.

The Problem With Subscription Finance Apps

Subscription apps aren’t bad because they’re expensive. They’re bad because of what the pricing model requires them to do to justify their existence.

To keep charging you monthly, they need to keep adding features you didn’t ask for. To keep the lights on, they need to stay connected to your bank account — because disconnection means churn. And to fund growth, some of them monetize your financial behavior in ways that aren’t always spelled out in the fine print.

The result: apps that are bloated, bank-connected, and built for their retention metrics — not for your actual financial life.

As a reseller juggling eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, and Etsy, my income isn’t a tidy biweekly paycheck. It’s a Poshmark sale on Tuesday, an eBay payout on Thursday, a slow week followed by a great weekend of sourcing. None of the big subscription apps were designed for that reality.

What Ownership vs. Subscription Actually Looks Like

Here’s the real comparison, broken down honestly:

AppMonthly CostAnnual Cost5-Year CostYou Own It?
Monarch Money$14.99$179.88$899.40
YNAB$9.08$108.99$544.95
Personal Capital$0$0$0*✕ (data sold)
Ania’s Tracker ✦$0$0$0✓ Forever

*Personal Capital is free because your data is the product.

One-time $17. That’s it. No renewals. No price hikes. No “sorry, we’re discontinuing the free tier.” If the company I host it on disappeared tomorrow, I’d still have the files and the app would still work.

Three Things That Actually Matter

The infographic above breaks down the three pillars that make ownership beat subscription every time for people like us. Let me walk through each one.

1. 100% Private Data

Every transaction you log, every account balance, every budget limit — stored only on your device. Not on my servers. Not on anyone’s cloud. Not being analyzed to sell you a refinancing offer.

There’s no bank login. No Plaid integration. No third-party access to anything. You enter your transactions manually, which takes about 2 minutes a day and means your financial data never leaves your phone.

For resellers especially, this matters. You don’t want your business income flowing through some VC-backed startup’s database.

2. Zero App Store Friction

This is the part most people don’t expect: it installs directly on your phone without the App Store or Google Play.

It’s a PWA — a Progressive Web App. You upload the files to a free hosting service (takes about 2 minutes), open the link on your phone, and tap “Add to Home Screen.” From then on it opens full-screen like a native app, complete with an icon on your home screen. No review process. No approval. No $99/year Apple developer fee.

💡 What’s a PWA? A Progressive Web App is a website that installs on your home screen and behaves exactly like a native app — full-screen, offline-capable, with its own icon. Major apps like Twitter and Starbucks use PWA technology. The difference is you can build and distribute one without going through an app store.

3. Works Anywhere, Offline

Once you’ve opened the app at least once with internet, it caches itself completely. After that, everything works with zero connectivity — add transactions, check budgets, review accounts, browse the calendar. The app has been designed to work in airplane mode, subway tunnels, rural sourcing trips, anywhere.

This is a real difference from subscription apps, which are almost entirely cloud-dependent. Lose your connection, lose your access.

The Professional Financial Tools You Actually Need

I want to be clear: this isn’t a stripped-down “budget spreadsheet in an app” situation. It’s a full personal finance tracker with everything you need and nothing you don’t.

📊

Real-Time Live Dashboard

Net worth, monthly income, expenses, and savings rate — all calculated from your real transactions and updated instantly. Includes a 6-month income vs expenses chart and projected end-of-month balance.

Works Anywhere, Offline

Caches locally so you can log transactions, check budgets, and review accounts in subway tunnels, on flights, or anywhere with zero connectivity.

🎯

Smart Budget Tracking

Set your own monthly limits per category. Progress bars turn yellow at 75% and red when you’re over. Budget spent amounts pull from real transactions — no double entry. Resets automatically on the 1st.

🎨

Fully Customizable Interface

4 preset color themes plus full hex color control. Add custom spending categories with emoji icons. Any currency symbol. Your name in the greeting. Make it completely yours in 60 seconds.

📅

Smart Calendar View

See your financial activity by day. Green dots for income, red for expenses. Tap any date to see all transactions logged that day. Navigate months to spot spending patterns.

🏦

Live Account Management

Track checking, savings, credit cards, PayPal, and more. Set starting balances once and watch them update live with every transaction. Net worth always accurate.

A Setup Wizard That Makes It Yours in 60 Seconds

The first time you open the app, a 4-step wizard runs automatically. It asks for your name (so it greets you personally), your currency (from 8 presets or any custom symbol), your preferred color theme, and whether you want to start fresh or keep sample data to explore.

After that, the ⚙️ Customize panel lets you go deeper — hex color pickers, custom category names and icons, account management, currency position. Everything saves to your device and persists every time you open the app.

Buyers in the UK set their currency to £ and it updates every number in the entire app. Resellers add “Inventory” and “Platform Fees” as custom categories. People who hate pink switch to Ocean Blue or Forest Green. It’s all in there.

Who This Is (and Isn’t) For

I’ll be straight with you because I think that’s more useful than a sales pitch.

This is for you if: you’re tired of monthly fees, you have variable income from reselling or freelancing, you want your financial data to stay private, you live outside the US and want a currency that actually fits, or you just want something that feels personal instead of corporate.

This isn’t for you if: you want automatic bank syncing and zero manual entry. The big subscription apps do that better. This requires logging transactions yourself — about 2 minutes a day. In exchange, your data never leaves your device.

Two minutes a day in exchange for never having to wonder who has access to your financial life. For me, that’s an easy trade.

The Bottom Line

Finance apps have conditioned us to think paying monthly forever is just how it works. It’s not. You can own a professional, beautiful, fully private finance tracker for the cost of one month of Monarch Money — and never pay again.

The infographic says it clearly: $17 total, $0 annual cost, yours to keep.

Compare that to Monarch Money at $180/year or YNAB at $109/year. In the time you’d spend paying for two months of either, you can own this outright for the rest of your life.
